What is permanent supportive housing?

Permanent supportive housing is an evidence-based homeless intervention that combines long-term, affordable rental assistance with voluntary, flexible supportive services designed to help people maintain their housing.

Permanent supportive housing serves individuals and families facing chronic homelessness, complex disabilities, or other severe barriers that prevent them from maintaining housing on their own. 

Unlike temporary emergency shelter, where individuals and families typically stay for a few months, or transitional housing, where they may live for up to two years, those with the greatest needs are prioritized for permanent supportive housing.

Housing has been nationally recognized as the most effective method of ending homelessness.

Why permanent supportive housing works.

Once an individual or family has been stabilized in housing, they are much more successful in addressing the issues that caused them to become homeless in the first place.

In fact, given an adequate supply of affordable housing and appropriate support, research has shown that more than 93% of those who experience homelessness never become homeless again.
