Our Housing-Focused Programs & Services
At Crossroads, we strive to prevent homelessness when possible, provide temporary emergency shelter when needed and support all of our clients as they work towards securing and maintaining stable housing.
Homeless Prevention
One of the most effective ways of addressing homelessness is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
For some, a small amount of support can make all the difference between remaining housed and falling into homelessness.
Crossroads' Housing Problem Solving program helps thousands of at-risk individuals and families either prevent or quickly end their homelessness through personalized solutions such as security deposits, covering utility arrears or other housing-related expenses.
Temporary Emergency Shelter
When homelessness can't be prevented, temporary emergency shelter is sometimes needed as a short-term solution—and Crossroads provides more shelter beds than any other organization in Rhode Island.
Crossroads’ four year-round shelters include:
- Harrington Hall, the largest men's shelter in the state (112 beds)
- Womens' Shelter (41 beds)
- Family Shelter (53 beds)
- Domestic Violence Safehouse (23 beds)
Winter Shelter
In addition to its four year-round shelters, Crossroads is also contracted by the State of Rhode Island to provide 24/7 Emergency Winter Shelter from November to April for up to 60 of the state’s most vulnerable residents, including:
- Hartford Avenue Emergency Winter Shelter: Up to 40 elderly and disabled individuals
- 160 Broad Street Community Room: 10 elderly and disabled individuals
- 160 Broad Street Dining Room: Three families, totaling up to 15 people
Housing
At Crossroads, we know that housing is the only proven solution for ending homelessness. That's why it's at the heart of all that we do.
To ensure our ability to help our clients secure stable and affordable housing, we own and manage more than 410 permanent supportive apartments statewide and maintain strong working relationships with local landlords.
These apartments are deeply subsidized, allowing extremely low or no-income residents to live safely with the housing-based services and supports they need for as long as they need them.
Because housing needs are different for everyone, our diverse housing portfolio allows us to serve a wide range of individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness, including:
- Single adults
- Couples
- Families with children
- Adults age 50+
- Medically vulnerable adults
Education & Employment Programs
In addition to homeless prevention, shelter and housing, Crossroads also offers a broad range of trauma-informed Education and Employment Programs designed to give people the skills they need to increase their earned income and maintain their housing.
Each year, hundreds of people participate in one or more programs designed to help improve their literacy and math skills, work towards their high school equivalency, train for a career or look for a job.
Our program offerings include:
- GED preparation & basic adult education classes
- Certified Nursing Assistant Training
- Employment resource center & pre-employment training
- Financial literacy
