Lori Medeiros joined the Crossroads team earlier this year as the Team Lead for Mobile Diversion and transitioned into the role of Manager of Housing Problem Solving in August. In her current role, Lori oversees a team of six case managers who assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness in securing support for first month’s rent, security deposits, utilities, and other resources needed to achieve permanent housing. Working collaboratively, the Mobile Diversion and Housing Problem Solving teams aim to help clients find safe, affordable housing as quickly as possible, often without a shelter stay.
In addition to her staff role, Lori is pursuing an MSW at Rhode Island College while completing an internship at Crossroads. As an intern, she provides one-on-one therapy for an adult living in one of our permanent supportive housing units and is piloting a life skills group for residents.
We decided to sit down with Lori for a staff spotlight to learn more about her and the impactful work she does.
What attracted you to Crossroads and why does its mission matter to you?
In my first career, I worked in the health insurance industry as IT support. After completing my undergraduate degree in Human Development at URI, I sought opportunities to explore the field of counseling and social work. As a volunteer at Friend’s Way, I found a passion for working with individuals and families going through difficult times and decided to pursue my master’s in clinical social work. Crossroads provides an opportunity for me to do meaningful work in my chosen field while completing my graduate degree.
What inspires you to go to work each day?
Definitely the clients…always the clients! Many of our clients have not been given a chance and no one was there to help them along the way. I love to hear the stories of what they’ve been through, and they are so grateful for an empathetic ear. One of my first clients has gone from living on the street to an apartment of his own and he is now working toward his GED through our Education and Employment Services Program. It’s great to help someone get housed and see them start to rebuild their life.
How do you feel your role impacts our community and those in need?
By helping people to navigate the housing process, we give them a step toward independence. We also work collaboratively with the downtown improvement committee and small business owners. Our presence in the city is appreciated and underscores that a housed community is a healthy community.
What is your favorite spot in Rhode Island?
As a lifelong Rhode Islander, my favorite spot is East Beach near Ninigret Park. My dog, Honey, and I love taking walks there whenever we get a chance.
