Welcoming a Family Home
By Crossroads Staff / June 23, 2016

By Damaris Molina

I have worked at Crossroads for about six years, first as a receptionist, and now as Team Assistant in the Marketing and Development department. Recently, I started handling in-kind donations and preparing “Welcome Home Kits,” which are baskets prepared especially for men, women and families leaving our shelters to move into housing, some for the first time in many years.

Each household that we move into housing receives a Welcome Home kit complete with all the essential items they will need in their new home. You can help us welcome our clients home by making a monetary or in-kind donation.

So, think for a moment about that first time you moved into your own apartment. What items or essentials did you need? What did you forget to bring? As I put toilet paper, paper towels, bathroom cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, dish soap, sponges, socks, underwear, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes and many more items into laundry baskets, I thought about how important it must be for a client or a family to have these essential items as they start fresh in their new homes. I felt a sense of peace and of excitement for these moms, dads, children, and individuals who have been through so many hard times for so long.

Yesterday, while I was in the donation room preparing one of these laundry baskets for a mom and her four children who are moving into housing, I thought to myself, being a mom of two what would I need?

I started “shopping” for this family, happily grabbed most of the items I mentioned above, plus pajamas for the kids and socks for all of them, and was so excited to know that this family would not have the burden of these expenses as soon as they moved into their new place.

I was glad that this mom of four would not have to worry about other items on her plate. I feel so grateful to work at Crossroads and to know that we are making such an impact on families and individuals as we help them get into permanent housing. And, I thought of all our donors and supporters whose generosity helps us purchase the items for the Welcome Home Baskets or contribute the items we need. And then, I thought about the children in their new pajamas, in beds of their own, finally safe in a new home and looking forward to a better life, and I felt blessed that I was able to be a part of that moment.
