Children Rock at the Crossroads Family Center

Children Rock at the Crossroads Family Center

Since late 2011, the Crossroads Family Center has sheltered a record number of families with small children. The Family Center has space for 15 families, but the demand for shelter has been so great in recent months that the staff has had to put cots and mattresses in the Center’s common area and computer study room to accommodate additional families.

Chontell Washington, Crossroads’ Family Literacy Coordinator, tries to come up with creative approaches to brighten the lives of the families and help the children enjoy learning activities while they are with us.

Homeless Families in Rhode Island

When Rhode Island families are faced with the daunting challenges of homelessness and seeking safe shelter, most turn first to Crossroads Rhode Island for the help they need. Just this past January, the number of families coming to us for shelter has exploded.
Client Spotlight: Thomas Hunold

Client Spotlight: Thomas Hunold

When Thomas Hunold became homeless, he had absolutely nothing left. Long gone was his financial success as a business entrepreneur who operated several successful martial arts schools. He used to pal around with sports celebrities, and he enjoyed a wonderful home, family life and beautiful children. Bad decisions and bad associates led him to ruin, and eventually, homelessness. “I had hit bottom,” Thomas says, “and I ended up in the Urban League homeless shelter. Luckily, I went to Crossroads to hang out during the day and meet with a case worker.” It was in the Crossroads Community Room that the outreach worker, Luis Pinto, reached out to Thomas and asked him if he would be willing to join in one of Crossroads’ neighborhood cleanup efforts. “I figured it was better to do something positive than to sit around doing nothing,” Thomas says, “and, I would have less chance of getting involved in something that might make my life worse. I just wanted to move forward, not get stuck.”

"Get Hired!" Program Prepares Students to Enter the Workforce

Rhode Island’s poor economy and high unemployment make it twice as hard for many Crossroads clients to compete for jobs. Just finding the resources one needs to look for work while being homeless is very difficult to manage. Fortunately, the Education and Employment Services programs at Crossroads can help make the transition to the workplace a little easier. A visit to Leanne Ovalles’ “Get Hired!” class, offered by Crossroads’ Intensive Pre-Employment Program, provides an opportunity to meet some very hard-working students and learn what they are doing to prepare for the workforce.

Home for the Holidays: Scott and Janine

Scott and Janine were desperate and didn’t know where to turn for help. They had been homeless, living on the streets or in night-to-night shelters for over a month when someone told them to go to Crossroads Rhode Island for help.
