Why?

The mission of Crossroads Rhode Island is to help homeless or at-risk individuals and families secure stable homes.

Why?

Because no young woman should be living under a bridge. No 22-year-old healthy man should be living in a tent hidden in a graveyard. No 9-year-old child should have to do her homework while living in her family’s car.

Why?

Because having a home the right thing for that woman, man and child. It is the right thing for our State.

Why?

Because maintaining people’s homelessness in shelter or on the streets costs taxpayers more than housing them. This is a fact for Crossroads as well as any effective organization working to end homelessness in this country.

So, what do we need to make this happen?

More housing. To be specific, more supportive and affordable housing. Crossroads can provide the “support” in the affordable housing. But we need your help to create more affordable housing. A new housing bond to create more housing can make that happen and benefit all sectors of our state.

Why?

In 2012, the taxpayers of Rhode Island voted to approve a $25,000,000 housing bond. The funds invested from that bond not only renovated and created new housing for our residents, they also added millions of dollars back into the economy.

Why?

Because when you renovate and build new homes, whether they are single family homes or affordable apartments, you need carpenters and electricians and plumbers and architects and so on. All those new jobs and investments are good for our economy. When our economy is stronger and growing, everyone benefits.

It is likely that there will always be people who find themselves homeless. Crossroads will always be there to help them get back on their feet and back into housing. It is my hope and intention to continue to work towards a time in our State’s history when no one will be living under a bridge, or in a tent, or in her car.

Why?

Because anything less than that is unacceptable.
